Do you know what this is doing to you and could their trainer have prevented it?

Intense exercise sessions can result in clients experience extreme muscle soreness a medical condition known as exertional rhabdomyolysis a catastrophic condition in which muscle fibers break down in response to exertion and release their breakdown products into the circulation.

Moderate cases can be triggered by endurance events—such as triathlons, marathons and basic military training—or by other exercise for which a participant is not well adapted sounds familiar like Debbie and Dave.

Is your trainer familiar with the symptoms of rhabdomyolysis and know how to prevent it? (Clearly not in Debbie and Dave’s Case).

Know the symptoms

In nearly all cases of rhabdomyolysis the exercise stimulus is an exercise load or an abrupt transition to a much greater exercise load. Dramatic increases in exertional load (duration and/or intensity).

Monitoring perceived effort in the early stages of training and observe for signs of excessive fatigue or overexertion. An excessive level of delayed-onset muscle soreness is always a reasonable indication that your trainer should know.

Clients More susceptible are those with a low level of fitness (new to exercise just like Debbie and Dave), and older individuals.

A healthy female gym goer who regularly engaged in resistance training attends a boot camp with a friend, trainer encourages her to increase her exercise repetitions and weight loads. She performed squats and lunges and worked her muscles to exhaustion. She experienced considerable fatigue in her legs, which shook while walking back to her car. The next day the woman experienced a “normal” amount of muscle soreness. At 48 hours post exercise, the soreness and pain in her legs became severe. The symptoms prompted her to seek our help.

Another case involved a middle aged male who had been in many sports during his younger years.

This client went to a local boot camp where the trainer instructed him to perform many sets of different types of exercises. The client worked so hard he vomited after the session. The next day he experienced extreme soreness that he was unable to train the rest of that week. One week after that exposure, he returned back to the boot camp, where the trainer had him perform exercises in the same manner as the last session despite the client informing him how he felt.
